This deviation is local, and we believe the long-term observed Power Law will return price back just as it has done before. Oscillations around this long-term attractor are a feature, not a bug or failure mode. This is how the system breathes: deviations expand and compress around a stable scaling relationship.

Weekly Macro (03/30 → 04/05)

Last week, equity market weakness and rising oil prices have heightened volatility across various asset classes. As the week progressed, the narrative shifted towards expectations of potential rate cuts following the appointment of Kevin Warsh to the Federal Reserve, suggesting a complex interplay between inflationary pressures from energy prices and the outlook for monetary policy. This evolving backdrop has introduced uncertainty into risk asset positioning, with market participants grappling with the implications of both geopolitical tensions and changing monetary policy.

As for Bitcoin, activity remained subdued early in the week, characterized by low on-chain metrics and a rangebound price. However, mid-week developments indicated a modest uptick in institutional interest, particularly through Bitcoin-backed financing options. On February 25, we published an article on X titled “Don’t be surprised this year.” We argue that we’ve been at these prices before, and should not expect quick resolution from this regime. Well! After a month of churn, we’re still here. Not only is that normal, but this behavior is also consistent with prior oscillations around the scaling trajectory.

Exponent and fit are our quick integrity checks. The exponent is the slope on the log-log chart and tells us how strongly price scales with time.

Today’s full-data exponent is 5.6343, tracking under the long-run reference we monitor. On the chart, you can see the full-data line working lower in the local window.

Bitcoin’s long-observed behavior is a power law. The exponent is the slope. r² is how well the data describes the structure. Structural integrity is how we describe whether that relationship is still intact.

We showed how you can measure structural integrity over 2-year and 4-year rolling windows, where we focused on plotting the rolling exponent (the β from that same sliding log–log OLS). Those charts revealed how aggressively the short window moves versus the longer one, and how both oscillate around the long-run attractor (5.65).

Most recently, we went deeper in Is regime shift on the way?, where we introduced the velocity of the 2Y curve to see whether the 2Y rolling exponent is starting to slow.

With all this focus on the exponent, we wanted to start plotting r² on the same rolling OLS timeframes.

We got one of the strangest charts we’ve seen yet.

The weird r² plot — “Scaling Shock”

This is busy, so let’s break it down:

• The light blue series we’re calling “Scaling Shock (Δr²). This is the one-day change in rolling 2Y r². When that line spikes, the goodness-of-fit of the two-year window just moved hard.

• The dark blue series ranks that daily shock against all history to date (an expanding percentile). It gives perspective into how extreme today’s jump in 2Y fit instability was versus the full dataset.

• The grey series is price deviation percentile. This is where spot sits versus the long-run implied price from the structural attractor (5.65), expressed as a percentile over time (phew).

When the two-year window stops behaving like one segment, Δr² and its percentile are usually the first to move. This dislocation in fit marks a potential regime transition.

If we smooth this signal, we can get a better read for persistence: a Regime Instability Score.

Isolating Regime Instability Score (RIS)

Regime Instability Score (RIS) is the absolute one-day move in 2Y r², with a 14-day span. RIS helps us understand how large have scaling shocks been, and how persistently.

Important: RIS is not “direction”, but the measure of the 2Y scaling shock.

On the chart, median / p90 / p99 bands are reference rails for typical / elevated / extreme for this metric. When RIS clears the sample p90 band, the chart uses a full-height background to visually flag the shock.

Bringing it back together

Okay, so we have a way to spot rare r² dislocation over a rolling two-year window. What can we do with it?

The picture comes together when we bring back price deviation and the 2Y rolling exponent percentile.

Again, breaking it down:

• The left scale tracks two percentile series: price deviation percentile and the 2Y rolling exponent percentile.

• The right scale tracks RIS.

• The gold shading marks periods when RIS is above its sample 90th percentile — in other words, when the two-year fit has been unusually unstable in smoothed terms.

What we notice, in several well-known eras, is RIS spikes lining up with stretches where exponent percentile and deviation percentile are also doing extreme work.

We are not claiming a formal causal model here, only visualizing the correlation in the data between fit instability, short-window slope state, and cheap vs rich vs implied.

We can finally say both curves are slowing down.

As of today, the 2Y rolling exponent sits near 4.06, and it’s just showing early signs of slowing its rate of descent. The 4Y sits near 7.21, nearing a top, with a much less noticeable daily change rate.

These curves are decelerating. The magnitude of their daily change is shrinking before finally transitioning into a new top or a new bottom.

To affirm deceleration, we expect to see 2Y velocity climb. Just as it has since early February. If you look closely, you can see how velocity spikes in either direction create ripples through the 2Y exponent.

Put another way: they appear to be “pulling up” or “pulling down” the underlying curve. Ultimately, velocity is just a representation of price fluctuations. In this case: larger positive price moves mean faster 2Y velocity, flattening the falling 2Y exponent until it bottoms, and the regime shift is completed.

We are not making a price call. We are reading the structure.

In Rolling Exponents Across Time Horizons, we showed how shorter windows (2Y, 4Y) capture regime and cycle effects, while longer windows (6Y, 8Y, 10Y, 12Y) better approximate the underlying growth rate. When both the 2Y and 4Y fall below 5.65, history suggests a regime worth watching.

We’re still far from that window. The 4Y, for example, might be 1 to 2 years away from crossing under. However, we do know how to monitor this.

Right now, the curves are in transition. Both are slowing.

5Y What?

In a previous article, we showed how rolling exponents over 6y, 8y, 10y, and 12y windows trend towards ~5.65 over time (as does the full price history). This context was built up from an earlier demonstration with 2y, and 4y windows, where you can really see the sensitivity of short-term price.

Since that article, we investigated a few other timeframes for additional research. Today, we’ll talk about the 5Y rolling exponent. Or in other words, the log-log regression of price over a rolling 5-year window.

The worst 5 years on record

The 5Y exponent has sunk to some of its deepest levels in history (3.52). Meaning, the last five years of price data, collectively taken as a rolling window, have underperformed the power-law implied price significantly. However, it does look like it’s mounting a recovery. If we start seeing Bitcoin shift into a new price regime, we should also expect to see this rolling exponent to lift towards 5.65 (eventually crossing over)

When you bring back the 2Y and 4Y plots we spoke about in the introduction, you get the sense we have been here before. Distinctly, around February of 2019.

Overlaying a plot of price deviation percentile shows what happened next. Six months later, Bitcoin would have a rally which would then fade into an even larger blow off top.

At a glance, this looks similar to what happened in 2022. If you look closely however, you’ll see the 5Y curve intersecting the 2Y in a downtrend. Our recent configuration puts us closer to the 2019 setup, where the 5Y intersects in an uptrend.

Applying Power-Law Intuition

The 5Y exponent calculation is done over a rolling window of 1,825 days. Each day, the oldest day drops out and the newest day enters. For the exponent to recover toward the long-term structural trend, the data leaving the window must be replaced by data that adheres better to the power law.

The 2022 low is still in the window. When it rolls out, we are swapping very weak price action for whatever comes next. If price from here trades at or above the power-law line, the new data will “pull” the exponent calculation up. If price stays far below implied, the new data is still weak, and recovery is slower.

Gravity, for Bitcoin

We believe the power law exerts a gravitational pull, acting as an attractor toward the long-term structural trend. Price deviates, but the scaling relationship holds. Over time, as the window rolls, we expect the resultant exponent will naturally trend back towards or, be “pulled back” toward that force.

Our hypothesis is tighter and tighter rolling exponent clustering (less sensitive than the 2Y and 4Y) as the time frame is widened.

When we measure the deviation on the extremes, we observe a narrowing of ranges as the time window widens.

• 2Y exponent range: about -8 to 15 (the earliest data distorts this)

• 4Y exponent range: about 1 to 10 (the earliest data distorts this)

• 6Y exponent range: about 4 to 7

• 8Y–12Y exponents: about 4.5 to 6

As the window lengthens, the distribution tightens around and oscillates around the full model’s exponent, not far from 5.65, but drifting around slightly each day as new price data comes in.

Zooming into the last 6 years, it’s clear how longer windows dampen short‑term variation. The 2Y exponent in particular is highly sensitive to recent market regimes, while 6Y and longer exponents remain within a narrower band.

This pattern suggests the underlying structural relationship (price vs time in log‑log space) is relatively stable over long horizons, and short‑term deviations reflect transitory regimes rather than a radically changing long-term structural exponent.

Removing the overly sensitive lines, the charts show a clear lead-lag.

• Early 2022: 6Y exponent peaks around 7.3–7.4, well above 5.65, as the 2021 run‑up dominates the 6‑year window.

• Late 2022 / 2023: 6Y falls and crosses below 5.65 while the 8Y (and later 10Y, 12Y) are still elevated.

• 2023–2024: 6Y reaches a trough near 4.0; 8Y and 10Y decline with a lag.

• Late 2025–2026: 10Y and 12Y drift back toward or above 5.65; 6Y and 8Y remain lower but rising.

Shorter windows turn first, and longer windows follow with a lag. That makes shorter rolling exponents useful as potential early signals, while longer ones describe where the system tends to converge.

From about 2016 onward, when enough history exists for 6Y–12Y windows, those series oscillate in a tight band around ~5.65. They rarely move more than a few units away, implying a gravitational pull toward that exponent. This is all great news for the power law, especially when you consider the long-term model fit, r², is increasing over time.

We are seeing Structural stability. The power law exponent appears to be a structural constant over long horizons, with 5.65 acting as a practical attractor.

Different timeframes can expose noise versus signal. 2Y and 4Y exponents capture regime and cycle effects. 6Y and longer exponents better approximate the underlying growth rate. This means large deviations of short vs. long exponents (e.g., 6Y well above 5.65 while 12Y is near it) can indicate temporary overheating or stress.

We have some anchors for projections. Using 5.65 as the baseline for long‑term fair‑value projections is consistent with how longer rolling exponents behave in the data.

The news is loud and that backdrop is truly just noise. Structure is the signal we look at, and structure is telling us the model is improving even as price trends away from the long-term implied value. The power law isn’t broken or breaking down. Infact, r² shows it’s improving each day.

The Gap

The chart shows the separation clearly. Spot sits beneath the fair value implied by the exponent. This is not a breakdown of the relationship. It is a deviation within it. The structural integrity of the model is measured by whether the scaling relationship continues to describe the data, not by whether price trades precisely on the line.

A Historically Low Regime

Not only are we in a low regime, we are only just entering this regime. We are seeing compression. It has occurred before, and it has persisted. Do not expect a quick snapback, even with the tailwinds in the news.

Could we bounce? We could. But do not be surprised if we go lower. Do not be surprised if we stay here for a while.

The structure describes the long run. The short run is noisy.

To put this in perspective, at 46.51% below its implied price, Bitcoin sits at the 17th percentile of the deviation distribution. Historically, this is a very rare regime.

The price deviation percentile measures where today’s deviation ranks versus all historical deviations from our locked exponent. A percentile of 50 means we’re at the median deviation—the midpoint of how far price has historically sat from the implied line. With price currently in the 17th percentile, we’re lower than about 83% of historical deviations.

When we plot this percentile from 2012 to the present, a pattern emerges. There is clear oscillation, reaching peaks and valleys that never last long before sharply reverting. This pattern holds through all observable data.

The power law describes this structural tendency, which is an observable long-term relationship between price and time. The implied line acts as the attractor at the center of this structure.

Power laws appear in natural systems. They describe scaling relationships that hold across magnitude. Time will reveal where we are ultimately headed, but for now we remain in a rare and volatile regime.

We’ve shown how the exponent and r² evolve over time, and how rolling windows reveal oscillations around the structural baseline. The foundation of all of this is the Bitcoin price chart itself.

Let’s look at the chart in linear, semi-log, and log-log form. We’ll also include the implied price. Remember, the slope of implied price is our reference exponent.

In this chart, both the Price and Year axes are linear. The most recent price history is easy to see, and the volatility is evident. However, the long-term structure is indecipherable. From this view, it’s impossible to really understand what happened before 2018, as the Price appears flat.

In the semi-log chart, with Price now in log form, we have a much better idea of those earlier years. Growth appears proportional, it oscillates around the Implied price, and travels in a channel. Additionally, this chart does a great job at showing Bitcoin’s decaying growth, which we observe as the Implied slope gradually bends downward.

In the final chart, both Price and Year are log-scaled. This is where we observe the power law as a straight line.

With the slope known, we can extend time out to understand where the implied price may fall in the future. To be clear, this isn’t a prediction so much as using geometry of the power law itself to project forward.

Here are the same three views, this time with the implied line extended and scaled through time.

When we push time out, on a linear chart, all existing price history practically collapses along the curve of the implied price.

On the semi-log chart, we see the same decaying growth, with orders of magnitude of potential growth.

The log-log chart again reveals our straight-line scaling through time. That is the power law.

Together, the exponent, the fit (r²), and the implied line give us valuable information on whether Bitcoin’s structure is intact. Our regular updates here monitor that stability.

In our last post we showed how a log-log regression over the full price data generates a daily exponent that oscillates around our reference value over time. We showed this in both zoomed-in and zoomed-out views. Additionally, we showed how it does this while r² (the model fit itself) increases.

To investigate those oscillations, we can use the same log-log regression but this time over different sliding time windows. Our team chose 2-year and 4-year windows as the basis for our long-term comparison.

Here’s how those rolling exponents look when graphed with our full exponent.

The rolling exponents oscillate around the full history exponent. The 2-year line moves more aggressively, and the 4-year line is smoother. This makes sense, especially when you consider the full history exponent becomes flat, sits on top of 5.65, and visually anchors the overall structure. In this sense, rolling exponents measure whether recent behavior is accelerating or decelerating relative to that structural drift.

Zooming into just the past two years reveals a visual top, where the exponent remained elevated between July 2024 and August 2025. This wasn’t the previous cycle top, which came in October, but it did represent an area where Bitcoin price was becoming overheated relative to the implied price. The 2-year exponent peaked and rolled over prior to the October price high, reflecting local flattening of log-log slope before the cycle top.

How can we use this?

We’re primarily interested in the crossing events. If we expect oscillation around 5.65 to continue, then what might these events suggest about time and price? There are two events we’re watching closely in the coming months:

1. If the current trajectory continues, the four-year rolling exponent is likely to top and cross below 5.65 in the coming months. That would signal that recent behavior has been flatter than the long-term pattern.

2. The two-year rolling exponent will bottom. That would signal that recent behavior has stopped dislocating to the downside, and historically, such bottoms in the short-window slope have preceded reversion toward the structural exponent.

We track these as instrumentation, not to replace the structural view. Historically, when both rolling exponents fall below 5.65, it is a regime worth watching closely. We believe the data indicates we are approaching that regime.

Let’s zoom in, over the last ~2 years of data, and explore how the exponent and r² have evolved. Included in blue are their reference values.

Over a short window, when you zoom in on the charts, you see the exponent oscillate around 5.65, a few hundredths above or below. You see r² move in a narrow band, sometimes crossing above or below its baseline.

This is the daily drift we expect, and measure. The structure itself isn’t a fixed number at every instant, but we observe a long-term tendency to be attracted towards this reference over time.

Volatility is not the same as breakdown. Breakdown would mean the line itself no longer describes the data. In a breakdown, the long-term relationship between price and time begins to fail.

Structural integrity means the scaling relationship and its measured fit continue to hold.

A system can have integrity and still correct. It can cycle. Integrity is whether the pattern continues to describe the system, not whether the system only moves upward.

Conviction rests on that integrity.

Beginning this week, we will publish regular Structural Status updates. These brief readings will outline whether the long-term relationship remains intact, shows signs of stress, or requires closer examination.

In our current model, that fit is very high, above 90%. This means most of Bitcoin’s long-term price behavior aligns with the scaling relationship. The remainder reflects deviations around the trend.

Price will move above and below the implied line. Those deviations can be measured as distance from the structure.

r² and deviation are two sides of the same coin: fit and distance.

A consistently high r² suggests the structure continues to describe the data well. A declining r² would indicate that new data is drifting further from the established trend.

This is where the idea of structural integrity becomes practical. Rather than reacting to price alone, we can examine the exponent and the fit to determine whether the structure remains intact.
